WebThe name Mennonite originated as an insult, flung at Anabaptist followers who subscribed to the teaching of Menno Simons, a converted Roman Catholic priest and early leader in the movement. The church co-opted the term and by 1544, Dutch Anabaptists were referring to themselves as Mennonite or Mennist. WebThe Dutch Anabaptists very deliberately chose the preposition “ uit ” (out of) and not “ van ” (from) in the phrase by which they described the new birth. The distinction is between the incarnation of Christ (from God) and the reverse incarnation of human beings into God.
